WINE & TAKE-OUT: Pairing to Chinese, Mexican, Thai, Indian Foods

By Mary Beth Vierra, Crush Course

(1 hour)

Don’t pass on the wine when you order take-out!  Join Certified Wine Educator and wine speaker/consultant, Mary Beth Vierra of Crush Course to discover how the right Wine can transform your Take-Out dinner, boosting flavor and adding balance.

Mexican, Chinese, Thai and Indian foods share commonalities (challenges and features) that call for wines with styles to match their flavor impact, or tone down the heat, or balance the umami.  Want to broaden your wine horizons (ehem, palates)?  Let’s explore the characteristics that drive these dishes and the wines that love to play with them.  You’re in for a delicious treat!

Mary Beth conducts live classes at various venues. Contact her for private events. Virtual events are held via Zoom. Crush Course helps you navigate the world of wine to discovery, confidence, and expertise.

Virtual Wine Explorations are designed for discovery and learning. Great for wine lovers of all levels, from beginners to industry professionals. Mary Beth’s style is engaging and approachable. These fun learning events also provide deeper insights that boost fluency and confidence for those in the beverage hospitality and service.

The virtual class lasts approximately 1:15 , including time for Q&A.   In-person versions are generally 1.5  hours

WINES (Optional for Virtual Events):
You’re invited to taste along with Mary Beth. Or, sit back, relax, and soak it all in. You don’t need the wines to enjoy and learn! (*Wines not included in the class price). After you register, you’ll receive a confirmation email with Mary Beth’s wine list to purchase if you want to taste along or feel free to open similar wines you have on hand. She makes an effort to select quality wines available from one online seller or are fairly available at local stores. For online shipping, allow at least 2-3 days for delivery.

Discover at least 3 Wines that pair deliciously with ‘traditional’ take-out cuisines (and don’t result in off-flavors).

  • Base characteristics of these cuisines that influence wine pairing
  • The key food-wine pairing principles for these pairings (dynamics you can also apply to many other food-wine combos)
  • Discover and taste (optional) 3-4 paired wines that may be new to you, their style and flavor profile, and what to look for
  • Discover sample dish/plate pairings for each wine from the various cuisines, and learn why the work
  • Learn the “watchouts” and how to select other wines when one of these aren’t handy for your next take-out evening
  • Example Wines that may be tasted in this class:
    • Prosecco, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Lambrusco, Gamay, Garnacha
    •      *Final Wine List will be emailed to registered participants

The virtual experience is held over Zoom Meetings.  You’ll need an internet connection and ability to stream audio and video. After registering, you’ll receive a confirmation email with the Zoom link, instructions, and the wines list ** You don’t need a Zoom account to participate; just click it to join. But best to test your computer’s streaming capabilities in advance.

For the Zoom:
internet access and ability to stream audio and video. In order to join us with your own video  (optional, but encouraged so you can better interact with Mary Beth), you’ll need a functioning camera on your computer or phone as well.

For the (optional) Tasting:  If you choose to taste along:
1-4 wines
1-4 wine stems (glasses)
Plain crackers and water to cleanse your palate
** Also Optional: To truly interact (and let’s admit, have a 3-dimensional experience), pick up some take-out food to enjoy and sample along with the (optional) wines.  Registered participants will receive a few inspirations, but bring whatever dishes you enjoy most!

Once you’ve registered, you’ll receive a confirmation email from Mary Beth or Crush Course.  *Assure you give us a working email address when registering/paying for the course.  You’ll then receive a follow up email with further instructions and a wine list, plus two reminder emails:  one about 24 hours before the course, and one an hour before.
